Has Soccer Failed to be Accepted by the American Public?

Filed under: Sports, Soccer - worldall @ 12:23 am

Contrary to general opinion, soccer was accepted early on in the United States. The 1869 Princeton vs. Rutgers football game-often celebrated as the first gridiron football contest-featured mostly kicking and "no throwing or running with the round, inflated ball" according to the Princeton student newspaper. Early college football was more like soccer (and rugby) than American football. Initially, soccer was a very popular sport among both upper-class young men in elite colleges and universities and among immigrant blue-collar workers toiling in the factories and harbors of northeastern cities and towns.

First Ride: 2006 BMW R1200GS Adventure

Filed under: Sports, Motorcycling - worldall @ 12:19 am

BMW’s Adventure has been broadening horizons since 2002. It’s become such a sales success since then that this new Adventure blockbuster—starring BMW’s latest boxer drivetrain instead of the original R1150 lump—was inevitable. The R1200GS is a beast, but it’s weedy alongside the ’06 Adventure, complete with taller screen, hand protectors, longer-travel suspension, stainless steel luggage rack and that enormous 8.6-gallon fuel tank.

Underneath, it’s all 1200GS. Power comes from the same eight-valve 1171cc boxer twin, fortified with a more powerful, 720-watt alternator and aluminum cylinder-head protectors. Strengthened to carry bigger saddlebags, the steel-tube chassis uses BMW’s Telelever front suspension and Paralever single-sided swingarm. Suspension travel is up nearly an inch at each end—8.3 inches up front and 8.7 inches in the rear—and wire-spoke wheels are standard.

VANDENBUSSCHE SUED FOR $10M

Filed under: Sports, Hockey - worldall @ 12:10 am

Former Pittsburgh Penguins enforcer Ryan VandenBussche, already facing charges of assaulting an Ontario police officer in a bar brawl this summer, now must defend himself against a $10.2 million lawsuit filed on the officer’s behalf.

VandenBussche was charged in July with assaulting a peace officer, assault causing bodily harm, resisting arrest and threatening death or bodily harm. The accusations stem from an alleged altercation involving 40 people in Turkey Point, Ont., in which VandenBussche was tasered and pepper sprayed by police outside the Turkey Point Hotel.

In a statement filed in Ontario Superior Court on Sept. 1, Const. Hector Jibbison’s lawyer said the officer suffered a broken nose, deviated septum, several cuts, scraps and bruises, dental damage, headaches, blurred vision and swelling as a result of his encounter with VandenBussche.

The lawsuit seeks $5 million in general damages, $2 million for shock and mental distress, aggravated damages totaling $1.5 million and $1.5 million in punitive damages.

VandenBussche, 33, played 20 games with the Penguins last season, amassing one goal and 42 penalty minutes. He has yet to sign with another NHL team.

When it comes to the business of slowing down, Formula One cars are surprisingly closely related to their road-going cousins. Indeed as ABS anti-skid systems have been banned from Formula One racing, most modern road cars can lay claim to having considerably cleverer retardation.

Marlins’ improbable season gets even better

Filed under: Sports, Baseball - worldall @ 11:43 pm

Team contending despite payroll lower than 16 players

There is overachieving, and then there are the Florida Marlins — for whom the word just doesn’t do justice.

Especially not after rookie Anibal Sanchez ended the longest no-hit drought in major-league history Wednesday. In only his 13th start after being promoted from Double-A Carolina in June, the 22-year-old right-hander blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks for the first no-hitter since Randy Johnson’s perfect game in May of 2004.

And the game’s most unlikely playoff contender ever has another improbable and historic moment to celebrate in a season full of them.

What is soccer?

Filed under: Sports, Soccer - worldall @ 8:43 pm

While that sounds like a simple question a quick look at many practice fields reveals a bewildering answer. Many practices find children facing situations that they never see in an actual match. This should lead a coach to evaluate the practice by first asking, "is it soccer?"
