The world’s first commercially-available electric-solar hybrid, and a sporty one at that

Filed under: Science & Technology, Gadgets & Inventions - worldall @ 4:55 pm

October 2, 2006 It’s not often we get lead stories on consecutive days from the same company (never before in fact) but French transportation futurists Venturi have done it again – this time with the first solar electric hybrid to be commercialised in the world. Named Astrolab (latin astro = star, labe = to take) because it takes its energy from the sun in order to move, the solar commuter is capable of working with very little energy (16 kW engine)

Nanocarriers that can kill tumors with drugs and DNA

Filed under: Science & Technology, Gadgets & Inventions - worldall @ 4:52 pm

October 2, 2006 Singapore scientists have developed nanoparticles that can carry both small molecular anticancer drugs and nucleic acids simultaneously for improved cancer therapy. The uniqueness of the new technology from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) lies in the design of a special biodegradable carrier (cationic core-shell nanoparticle), which can enclose drug molecules and allow therapeutic nucleic acids to bind onto it.

2GB Sumvision Wiki Pro Media Player

Filed under: Science & Technology, Gadgets & Inventions - worldall @ 9:41 pm

Sumvision’s new Wiki Pro media player stands out from the Chinese DAP crowd because it seems to be directly available only in the UK. Sporting a 1.8-inch TFT display (120 x 160 resolution, 65K colors), the 2GB device features an FM tuner and recorder, photo browser, games, text viewer, AMV video support, and an integrated lithium battery that can be charged via the included USB cable or power adapter. The Wiki Pro is equipped with a non-standard headphone jack (2.5 mm), but its built-in speaker allows users without a stereo cable adapter to enjoy MP1, MP2, MP3, WAV, and WMA playback out of the box.

The oddly named player measures 3.11 x 1.65 x 0.47 inches and also doubles as a USB flash drive. Available now for about $115.

Reduce Allergies or Stress with Aromatherapy Jewel Pens

Filed under: Science & Technology, Gadgets & Inventions - worldall @ 9:37 pm

Here at the office, I’m constantly hearing people sneeze or cough due to allergies. In fact, sometimes it becomes a daily contest to see how many times a person can sneeze in one sitting.

So, I’ve been on a continuous mission to find something to help my fellow allergy allies, especially our Web Producer Rachel Florman whom I say "Bless you" to every day.

Then this morning, I had a relevation. I found the Swiss Aromatherapy Jewel Pens.

Each pen contains a replaceable roll-on jewelSTIK that is filled with 100% pure essential oils that are made in Switzerland.

The available aromas are:

  • Ginger/Red: energize, revive, awaken and uplift.
  • Eucalyptus/Blue: boost the immune system and help fight off allergies.
  • Mint/Green: reduce tension and soothe headaches.
  • Lavender/Purple: relax your mind and soothe the body.
  • Orange Blossom/White: relieve stress and reduce tension.
  • Grapefruit/Yellow: reduce motion sickness and help suppress appetite.
  • Rose/Pink: lift your spirits and create a feeling of love.

Each pen also comes with a napa leather pouch to protect your pen.

Get the Aromatherapy Jewel Pens for $50 each from SatinBox.com.

A microwave beyond the ordinary

Filed under: Science & Technology, Gadgets & Inventions - worldall @ 12:21 am

This is the era of intelligent gadgets – those that not only feed the couch potato culture, but also take away your cerebral exercise with panache. The simplest personal example is how I have become utterly dependent on my cell phone to call even my closest friends or family. All because I really don’t have any of their numbers in my own (natural) memory like I did a years ago when cell phones were inaccessible to the masses. So I always have to guard my cell phone to help me remain connected.
