Berkeley scientists land grant to study radioactive attack treatments

Filed under: Science & Technology, Chemistry - worldall @ 4:47 pm

Berkeley Scientists are on the front lines of preparation for a ‘dirty bomb’ attack or other radiological incident.

Moon Chemistry Confirms Violent Origin

Filed under: Science & Technology, Chemistry - worldall @ 9:31 pm

The mystery of how Earth got its Moon is one step closer to being solved.
The European Space Agency’s lunar-orbiting craft called SMART-1 has completed the first detailed chemical mapping of the lunar surface. The detected chemicals, such as calcium and magnesium, give a boost to the longstanding theory that the Moon was formed from the debris flung into space after a collision between early Earth and a Mars-size planet, Space.com reported.
Calcium, in particular, is found deep inside Earth. So if the Moon has a lot of calcium, then perhaps it is made of material that was once inside our planet.

Researchers caution against improper use of sunscreen

Filed under: Science & Technology, Chemistry - worldall @ 9:27 pm

California researchers report that sunscreens are beneficial, but the lotion itself can actually generate compounds that damage the skin if they are not reapplied often enough to maintain a constant protective sun shield.

When skin is exposed to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation is absorbed naturally by skin molecules that then can generate harmful compounds called reactive oxygen species or ROS molecules, according to lead researcher Kerry M. Hanson, a senior research scientist in the department of chemistry at the University of California at Riverside.

What is chemistry?

Filed under: Science & Technology, Chemistry - worldall @ 12:00 am

Chemistry [kem’-ihs-tree] is the science about chemical elements and compounds, and how these work together. It is the study of the materials that make up our bodies and everything in the world around us.

Chemistry began as a true science during the 1600s. This is when chemists discovered the simplest substances that make up all other substances. These simple substances are called elements. For a long time before that, people were trying to study these things to figure out how to do things like make gold, but no one ever did. This was called alchemy [all-kem-mee].

A chemical compound is a substance made up of two or more elements.
