Hotel guests leave plenty of germs behind

Filed under: Recreation, Travel - worldall @ 4:41 pm

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) — Hotel guests leave behind more than just socks and old paperbacks: A new study found viruses on TV remotes, light switches and even hotel pens after cold sufferers checked out.

The germ testing was done before the rooms were cleaned, so it probably overstates the risks that most travelers would face. Nevertheless, it shows the potential hazards if a hotel’s turnaround amounts to little more than changing the sheets and wiping out the tub.

Autumn fishing in 2006

Filed under: Recreation, Outdoor Recreation - worldall @ 8:32 pm

The weather has definitely turned cooler in the evenings this past week and the trace of snow this past weekend is an indication that we are entering into the fall season. Anglers know that this marks an exciting time for them.

Some of the most productive fishing of the entire season can occur during this season. Cooler water temperatures and some fall spawning fish getting into the pre-spawn mode create excellent opportunities for the fisherman or woman.

Top 3 Magic Trick Tips to Performing Magic

Filed under: Recreation, Magic Tricks - worldall @ 8:23 pm

Magic has been around for as long as one can remember. Magic is something that can take people from reality to fantasy. I have been interested in magic since I was just little toddler. I’ll never forget the day when I actually thought that my very own ear could produce nickels and dimes, real money! I was amazed at how my uncle could just reach out to my ear and pull out a dime at will. This was unbelievable in my eyes!  What was more unbelievable was that my uncle actually let me keep the money that he kept pulling from my ear. I would run down to the local candy store and get my favorite sugar coated candy and would be on cloud nine for the rest of the day. Funny thing was, is when I tried to reach into my ear, there was no money coming out. How was it that my uncle could do such a thing and I couldn’t? Well that is when I needed to find out how this was done and was introduced to the wonderful world of magic!

Price of bread on the rise after UK’s summer heatwave

Filed under: Recreation, Food and Drink - worldall @ 8:19 pm

The price of a loaf is expected to have risen by as much as 4p by the time Britain’s sizzling summer has taken its toll on this year’s poor wheat harvests.

Disappointing low yields reported by farmers, many of whom have had to harvest their crops weeks earlier than usual, are helping to force up the price of flour.

Farmers defend food safety

Growers should be open to questions — even visits — by people who buy what they grow

Randy Kiyokawa loves farming, being part of the third generation that is growing fruit in the Parkdale area of Oregon that offers a postcard view of nearby Mount Hood.

In the past, most of Kiyokawa’s time was spent on a tractor.

Now he spends about 20 hours a year on a tractor and more time coordinating the labor for the farm. The rest of his time is spent marketing, promoting and ensuring that his family’s produce gets to farmers’ markets - or have the markets come to the land his Japanese grandfather first farmed in 1911.

More Women Prefer Dogs Over Husbands

Filed under: Recreation, Dogs - worldall @ 8:05 pm

An online poll released by DogCatRadio.com, shows more women would rather have a pet than a husband.

Of the 103,900 votes cast in a period of seven days, an overwhelming 78% voted for a furry rather than a hairy companion. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
While it’s been said that a dog is "Man’s best friend", the radio station says that 87% of its listeners are women between the ages of 23-49.

"Life’s too short to commit to someone you will need to know over time," says Nancy Keller, 29. "I’d rather have a pet and simply date. Less stress on everyone involved."

In a somewhat related subject, we published the results of a survey which showed that 51% of the respondents blame their spouse for disturbing their sleep, while only 38% blamed their pet.

Not Short on Style: 2007 Infiniti FX45

Filed under: Recreation, Autos - worldall @ 8:02 pm

This coppery-orange number turned out to be just the right ride when I picked up our freshman from Detroit’s College for Creative Studies for a weekend at home. It drew industrial design students to the entrance of his building like feral cats to an open can of fresh tuna, and they started walking around it and pointing at elements like it was a freaking concept car visiting their studio.

BMW M10 supercar from Racing Dynamics: Do they know something that we don’t?

Filed under: Recreation, Autos - worldall @ 7:57 pm

Traditionally aftermarket tuners wait until the car is already on the market before they start planning how they’re going to tweak it, but Italy’s premier BMW tuning house Racing Dynamics is apparently staying ahead of the curve by releasing details of their intended mods for what they believe will be the new BMW M10 supercar.

The Racing Dynamics RS55 Coupe is set to feature a 655-hp V10, which the tuner expects to push the car past a top speed of 215 mph. (They released the picture above together with the ambitious stats.)

We’re not sure how they can predict what speed a modified version of a car that doesn’t yet exist might be able to reach, but we’re looking forward to finding out! Racing Dynamics expects the car to hit the market in 2009.

If you truly want to get the feel for a city, you need to get a taste of the city first.

"You don’t really understand a place unless you’ve eaten its specialties. It’s what they pour their hearts into. It’s where their pride lies, and it’s one of the greatest delights of travel," said Pauline Frommer, creator of the Pauline Frommer travel guides.
