Pain Medication and Recovering Addicts

Filed under: Health, Addiction - worldall @ 8:45 pm

Persons with an addiction history are not immune from physical pain. Whether it is an acute immediate short term pain situation such as a broken bone, sprain or other soft tissue damage, or a more chronic situation - less likely to heal - such as vertebral degeneration, arthritis or fibromyalgia, pain is as much a fact of life for the recovering person as it is for anyone else. Alcohol and the Heart Part II

Filed under: Health, Addiction - worldall @ 8:11 pm

Part II of II

The metabolic effects of alcohol are very important. Dr. H. Pawnall, in an article published recently(9), stated that after an acute dose of alcohol, plasma alcohol levels rise rapidly especially if consumed on an empty stomach. Two drinks can raise plasma alcohol levels to near intoxicating levels (0.05 % = 10 MMOl/L) which in some persons will alter perception and produce some impairment of motor skills. If the alcohol is consumed with fat containing foods, the peak alcohol level is lower but the appearance of the alcohol in the plasma is more persistent; hence the appropriateness of the adage "Don’t drink on an empty stomach".

The toxic effect of alcohol extends to the brain, the liver, the heart, and many other organs.

Everyone is Genetically Vulnerable to Addiction

Filed under: Health, Addiction - worldall @ 3:28 pm

Nearly everyone inherits a vulnerability for addiction to mind-altering chemicals, according to new research. Between 60 million and 70 million Americans have tried an illegal drug some time in their lives, and 4.2 million have become addicted. Sixty-five million Americans drink alcohol, and slightly more than 8 million have become dependent. Thirteen percent of Americans 12 and older are heavy cigarette smokers, more than a pack a day, and 57% of them say they find it difficult to quit.
