US rate of childhood obesity to hit one in five by 2010

Filed under: Health, Weight Loss - worldall @ 9:34 pm

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Unless public health takes urgent measures, one in five children in the United States will be obese by the year 2010, the Institute of Medicine warned in a report.

Currently, one third of American children are obese or at risk of becoming so. The rate of childhood obesity has jumped from 16 percent in 2002, to 17.1 percent in 2004 and will reach 20 percent in four years, the report said.

"The good news is that Americans have begun to recognize that childhood obesity is a serious public health problem, and initiatives to address it are under way," said Jeffrey Koplan, who heads an institute committee on preventing childhood obesity.

No evidence of tampering in E. coli outbreak

Filed under: Health, Nutrition - worldall @ 9:22 pm

Tampering is not suspected in an outbreak of E. coli linked to fresh spinach, federal health officials said Monday as they continued to probe the source of the contamination and warned consumers not to resume eating fresh spinach products.

The Food and Drug Administration has linked a California company’s fresh spinach to the outbreak, which has killed one person and sickened at least 109 others. Investigators are working to pinpoint the source of the bacteria. Possible sources include contaminated irrigation water.

“At this time we have no evidence supporting tampering,” FDA spokeswoman Susan Bro said.

New Drug Therapy May Lead To Cure For Diabetes

Filed under: Health, Diabetes - worldall @ 9:16 pm

Type 1 diabetes develops when your pancreas stops making insulin, what the body needs to break down sugar. Nobody knows why this happens, and there’s no cure for it. Patients rely on taking insulin, but now, doctors say a drug could make that a thing of the past.Last year at this time, Ohio native Kaitlin Walsh-Reed was taking off on a plane for a trip to Florida. But today, the 17-year-old’s plane landed 800 miles north, outside Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.

Organize Your Medications for Breast Cancer Treatment

Filed under: Health, Cancer - worldall @ 9:04 pm

While I was in treatment for breast cancer, there were so many pills to take, once I came home from a chemo session. Since I often suffered from fuzzy thinking, or "chemo brain" I had trouble keeping track of the doses and timing, even though I used a pill organizer. Some pills were large, some were small, and some were daily, some were weekly. Here is a product review of a 7-Day Pill Organizer that has clearly marked days and 4 sections per day. This would have helped me keep track of my pill schedule!

Pain Medication and Recovering Addicts

Filed under: Health, Addiction - worldall @ 8:45 pm

Persons with an addiction history are not immune from physical pain. Whether it is an acute immediate short term pain situation such as a broken bone, sprain or other soft tissue damage, or a more chronic situation - less likely to heal - such as vertebral degeneration, arthritis or fibromyalgia, pain is as much a fact of life for the recovering person as it is for anyone else. What is different is the perceived risk associated with pain medication.

Your Stress Diary

Filed under: Health, Managing Stress - worldall @ 8:30 pm

Introduction:
Stress Diaries are useful for understanding the causes of short-term stress in your life. They also give you an insight into how you react to stress.

The idea behind Stress Diaries is that on a regular basis you write down how stressed you’re feeling, so that you can understand these stresses and then manage them. This is important because often these stresses flit in and out of our minds without getting the attention and focus that they deserve.

Physiology Of The Stress Response

Filed under: Health, Managing Stress - worldall @ 5:10 pm

Introduction
This article provides an insight into what happens at a physiological level when a person becomes stressed. Although this article may seem rather complicated, it is an oversimplification of what happens. It is suggested that readers interested in increasing their understanding about this topic refer to advanced texts that are available.

The Stress Response
When people perceive that they are in threatening situations that they are unable to cope with, then messages are carried along neurones from the cerebral cortex (where the thought processes occur) and the limbic system to the Hypothalamus. This has a number of discrete parts.

DEFINITIONS OF STRESS

Filed under: Health, Managing Stress - worldall @ 6:59 pm

In the past four decades, a number of useful definitions of stress have been developed by researchers. We provide a range of these below:

Stress arises when individuals perceive that they cannot adequately cope with the demands being made on them or with threats to their well-being. R.S. Lazarus (1966). Psychological stress and the coping process. New York: McGraw-Hill.

Stress, it is argued, can only be sensibly defined as a perceptual phenomenon arising from a comparison between the demand on the person and his or her ability to cope. An imbalance in this mechanism, when coping is important, gives rise to the experience of stress, and to the stress response. T. Cox (1978). Stress. Basingstoke: Macmillan Education.

Stress results from an imbalance between demands and resources. R.S. Lazarus and S. Folkman (1984). Stress, Appraisal and Coping. New York: Springer.

Stress is the psychological, physiological and behavioural response by an individual when they perceive a lack of equilibrium between the demands placed upon them and their ability to meet those demands, which, over a period of time, leads to ill-health. S. Palmer (1989). Occupational stress. The Health and Safety Practitioner, 7, (8), 16-18.

A simple definition that can be used is: Stress occurs when pressure exceeds your perceived ability to cope.

S. Palmer, 1999.

Stress and Your Performance

Filed under: Health, Managing Stress - worldall @ 5:56 pm

So far, we have seen that stress is a negative experience. We have seen the short-term negative effects that stress hormones can have on your performance, and have seen how stress can contribute to burnout.

The Positive Effects of Pressure

Sometimes, however, the pressures and demands that may cause stress can be positive in their effect. One example of this is where sportsmen and women flood their bodies with fight-or-flight adrenaline to power an explosive performance. Another example is where deadlines are used to motivate people who seem bored or unmotivated. We will discuss this briefly here, but throughout the rest of this site we see stress as a problem that needs to be solved.
