On-screen Keyboard

Filed under: Computers, Computer Tips & Tricks - worldall @ 8:04 pm

This might seem like a silly tip or even a silly function, but I’ve already found a use for it once and I’m sure that you’ll be able to use it at some point.  Windows XP comes with a built in on screen keyboard.  Basically a graphic of a keyboard comes up and acts like your keyboard, you can use your mouse to hunt and peck around.  What uses does this have and what did I use it for?  Well, it’s good for people with disabilities, where it would be easier to use a mouse than trying to type or it’s great to use when your keyboard goes loco on you.  Yes, we’ve all had our keyboard go nuts.  Here is how you launch it:

  • Go to start
  • Go to run and type OSK
  • Then the keyboard comes on

It’s just that simple.  It’s best to make a desktop icon for it or a shortcut, because if your keyboard should go out on you, it would be handy to have it.  All you do to create the shortcut is to:

  • Right click on the desktop
  • Click the new shortcut button
  • Type osk, click next twice, and there you have it.

Turning off the Hibernation (No sleeping for your comp!)

Filed under: Computers, Computer Tips & Tricks - worldall @ 7:53 pm

For most people this function might be good, but personally, I leave my computer on all the time, it’s always downloading, or working at something, and it isn’t practical for my computer to take a little sleep.  So, here is how you shut off this little hibernation feature:

  1. Go to your Control Panel
  2. Go to Performance and Maintenance
  3. Click on the Power Supply Option
  4. Click on the tab that says, "Hibernate"
  5. Unclick the box that says "Enable Hibernation"
  6. Click Okay

That’s all there is to it and now your computer won’t go into hibernation mode when you’re away from it.  No sleeping computer for you!

Security products sell despite freebies

Filed under: Computers, Software - worldall @ 7:49 pm

NEW YORK - Microsoft gives away a security firewall with its latest operating system. Many high-speed Internet service providers offer free anti-virus protection for subscribers. And several Web sites distribute free toolbars to warn of Web scams.

AOL even recently made a package of basic security tools — anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs — available for free to anyone, not just paying subscribers.

How Does Antivirus Software Work?

Filed under: Computers, Privacy & Security - worldall @ 7:44 pm

If you want to make sure that you’re protected from viruses, you should get some antivirus software. This software can offer peace of mind, even for experienced computer users who would be unlikely to open a simple virus.

Antivirus software works in two ways. Firstly, it has a big ‘dictionary’ of viruses, allowing it to scan files and flag any that are known to be viral. Secondly, the software monitors the system for any suspicious activity. One method involves creating decoy files that are hidden from the user and monitoring them to see if they are altered – if they are, then it was almost certainly a virus.

University dumps Cisco VoIP for open-source Asterisk

Filed under: Computers, Networking - worldall @ 7:39 pm

Sam Houston State University replaces Cisco CallManagers, Nortel PBXs with Linux-based VoIP and messaging servers

Some organizations consider taking the plunge off of big iron PBX platforms into IP telephony as being pretty daring, but that’s nothing compared to what Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is doing. The south Texas school is boldly moving thousands of users off a Cisco VoIP platform to an open-source VoIP network based on Asterisk.

Foresight Linux sneaks up on v1.0

Filed under: Computers, Linux - worldall @ 9:15 pm

Chief maintainer Ken Van Dine announced the release of Foresight Linux 0.9.8, which uses a 2.6.17.8 kernel and sports the new GNOME 2.16 desktop. The distro comes as either a single DVD or double CD iso download.

"[We’re] still on the path to Foresight Linux 1.0," Van Dine said in the Sept. 8 release announcement. "We want to do some more testing, but what we have is pretty close to what 1.0 will be."

Here are a few of the highlights of the latest release, according to the project team:

•GNOME 2.16 desktop
•Conary 1.1.3 package management
•rPath Appliance Agent 1.0.4
•X.Org 7.1.1 window manager
•Evolution 2.8.0 email client
•OpenOffice.org 2.0.3
•Mono 1.1.16.1 to run .NET client/server apps

"Our bleeding edge stuff will be cooked onto foresight.rpath.org@fl:1-devel, and shadowed to @fl:1 when it is ready for widespread consumption. We will always strive to stay incredibly current," Van Dine said.

Foresight is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on rPath Linux (and its Conary package management). It showcases the latest work from the GNOME project, and includes a number of "innovative" software packages — such as Beagle, Zeroconf, and Mono — together with a "clean default theme and artwork," according to the Foresight project.

The Foresight Linux 0.9.8 DVD image (1.1GB) is available for free download directly from this url (links to iso image file). The double CD iso download can be found here.

Abit AW9D-MAX: When “Beta” MAX is a good thing

Filed under: Computers, Hardware - worldall @ 8:49 pm

We recently previewed the Abit AB9-Pro motherboard based on the P965 chipset and were impressed with its stock performance even though we had difficulty overclocking it with the early production BIOS. Abit has released a new performance oriented BIOS and we will be revisiting its performance in our upcoming P965 shootout. In the meantime Abit has been busily preparing their flagship Intel motherboard based on the 975X chipset. Abit recently provided us with a production level AW9D-MAX motherboard along with a beta BIOS that is undergoing final quality assurance and performance testing prior to going into production next week. We were hoping to have a production level BIOS available in time for a full review of the board against its competition from ASUS, DFI, Foxconn, and MSI. However, due to amount of comments and emails we received asking about the performance of the board we decided to provide a short preview utilizing a subset of our current benchmark suite.

Google’s “Big Daddy” Update

Filed under: Computers, Google - worldall @ 7:25 pm

In December 2005, Google began to roll out what they called the "Big Daddy" update, and by the end of March 2006 it had been fully deployed in all of their datacenters. It wasn’t a normal update, which are often algorithm changes. Big Daddy was a software/infrastructure change, largely to the way that they crawl and index websites.

Altec Lansing release high-end speakers

Filed under: Computers, Digital Audio & Video - worldall @ 6:57 pm

Altec Lansing aims to break the stranglehold of Logitech and Klipsch when it comes to high-end speaker systems for the computer by introducing the 2.1 FX4021 and the 5.1 FX5051 speaker systems. The minimalist design might not look like much, but both FX systems are more than capable of producing clean sounds found in much bigger systems. Using the unique isobaric subwoofer design, both speaker systems bring rich sound and a thumping bass in less space. The satellites’ also feature a real two-way system which has a couple of active drivers each. The inclusion of a wireless remote control enables you to mount the speakers on the wall without any problem controlling them. More details concerning the FX4021 and FX5051 are available after the jump.

Hackers Post Code for New IE Attack

Filed under: Computers, Computer Corner - worldall @ 6:44 pm

Antivirus vendors have yet to see the code used in any attacks, however.

Hackers have discovered a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer, and they’ve released code that could be used to attack users of Microsoft’s popular browser.

The vulnerability is similar to a bug that Microsoft patched last month in a multimedia component of Internet Explorer, according to Vincent Hwang, a group product manager with Symantec’s Security Response team.
