Green Day, U2 Recording Song To Benefit New Orleans Musicians

Filed under: Arts, Music - worldall @ 6:13 pm

Last week, Green Day promised they’d be unveiling a "big announcement" very soon, and they weren’t kidding.

Late Thursday night, the band posted on GreenDay.com that they’ll be heading into the studio with none other than U2 to record a cover of "The Saints Are Coming," a tune by late-’70s-era Scottish band the Skids (one of whom went on to form Big Country), to benefit Music Rising, an organization that replaces instruments lost by musicians in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Jessica Spins; Nas, Ne-Yo, Peas Hold It Down: VMA Week Party Report

Filed under: Arts, Music - worldall @ 8:43 pm

NEW YORK — Night two of VMA week found the parties rocking full-tilt in Manhattan. The biggest problem is not finding a hotspot, but figuring out how long you’re going to stay at one party before moving on to the next — there’s that much going on. …

Early parties Tuesday included the Roots‘ album-release party at Cielo in the Meatpacking District, where Ne-Yo and Skillz came through to show love to the legendary rap troupe. Even though the relatively small venue had a VIP section cordoned off with velvet ropes, it didn’t stop the hip-hop band from mingling with the crowd — well, except for ?uestlove, who was busy DJing. The party started off slow, but before long ?uest brought the crowd to the dance floor with a flurry of old-school classics like Salt-N-Pepa’s "Tramp" and Onyx’s "Slam." …

Rhymes busted, charged with assault

Filed under: Arts, Music - worldall @ 8:27 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Rapper Busta Rhymes was arraigned Sunday on an assault charge stemming from an incident in which he reportedly attacked a man for spitting on his car.

Police released few details about the arrest except that it was for an incident that occurred August 12. Rhymes was arraigned on a charge of third-degree assault and was released on his own recognizance, said Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office. He is due back in court on October 24.

Representatives of the rapper, whose legal name is Trevor Smith, could not immediately be reached for comment. Messages left for Violator Management and for a lawyer who once represented him were not returned.

Police have wanted to interview Rhymes since the February shooting death of one of his bodyguards, Israel Ramirez.

Ramirez, 29, was killed outside a Brooklyn studio where Rhymes was recording a music video.

The performer and another bodyguard were sued the following month by a fan who says the two men beat him after he asked for the rapper’s autograph.

The arrest occurred around 8 p.m. ET Saturday when police apprehended Rhymes after he performed at the Amsterjam Music Festival on Randalls Island.
