New Films Struggle to Arouse Moviegoer Interest

Filed under: Arts, Movies - worldall @ 5:53 pm

LOS ANGELES - The first fall weekend is sometimes a surprise at the North American box office.

While the top performers usually don’t rack up big numbers, occasionally a film will pop up and take the weekend to new heights, as was the case last year when the low-budget horror The Exorcism of Emily Rose opened to $30 million. This, however, is not shaping up as one of those weekends.

Three new films will enter the fray, but none is likely to top $10 million: the horror flick The Covenant, the Los Angeles-based thriller Hollywoodland, and the Thai action film The Protector. Reigning champ Invincible earned $15.4 million during the four-day holiday weekend.

‘Hollywoodland’ explores Superman’s life off screen

It’s called the dream factory. But what happens when the dreams are defective?

What do you do with the spoiled, the seconds, the damaged goods? What do you do with the would-have-been glamour queen who never gets beyond third-girl-on-the-left? What do you do with the could-have-been matinee idol whose right profile went wrong? Where do they go?

Story of ‘Invincible’ hero hits inspirational mark

Filed under: Arts, Movies - worldall @ 7:54 pm

In 1976, at the start of his first year as the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach, Dick Vermeil issued an open call to anyone who wanted to try out for the team. Having lost the last game of the previous dismal season, 31-0, to the Cincinnati Bengals in a dreary, snowy Veterans Stadium, the Eagles had nothing left to lose.

Best critic - The Da Vinci Code

Filed under: Arts, Movies - worldall @ 2:34 pm

Cannes Film Festival 2006 Latest Hollywood, London, Cannes Gossip.

Who best to ask what they think of a film than the lead actor. Tom Hanks seemed to play down the film when interviewed by the London Evening Standard, referring to it as "a good story not to be taken too seriously."

Who best to ask what they think of a film than the lead actor. Tom Hanks seemed to play down the film when interviewed by the London Evening Standard, referring to it as "a good story not to be taken too seriously," perhaps his comments were more aimed at the Roman Catholic community to ensure they are not missing when it comes to box office takings. A senior Vatican official, Archbishop Angelo Amato, called for a boycott of the film, describing the book as "stridently anti-Christian." Watch the film and you’ll understand!

So first the Da Vinci Code book, then the Quest online game, then the film, now the train….yes the Da Vinci Code train left Waterloo station this morning on it’s way to Cannes. Eurostar chairman Guillaume Pepy, Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou , Sir Ian McKellen, director Ron Howard and author Dan Brown got together to unveil the latest part of the film’s promotional ‘brand-wagon’ by way of a co-branded Eurostar train. If you think it stops there think again, after the celebrities have had their fun you’ll be able to book "The Da Vinci Adventure" travelling on The Da Vinci Code Train, visit the Louvre Museum and join a treasure hunt to win 200,000 Euros, Da Vinci Code hotel rooms thrown in as part of the package.

Anyway back on track - Two days after the world premier the French police have indicated that they intend to go on strike outside the Palais des Festivals, headquarters of the Cannes International Film Festival, although we are led to believe that the strike has nothing to do with the festival, it is more to do with "working conditions"………heat, celebrities, Hollywood gossip, parties etc.

The Da Vinci Code premiers Wednesday 17th May 2006 at the Cannes Film Festival.
