Green Day, U2 Recording Song To Benefit New Orleans Musicians

Filed under: Arts, Music - worldall @ 6:13 pm

Last week, Green Day promised they’d be unveiling a "big announcement" very soon, and they weren’t kidding.

Late Thursday night, the band posted on GreenDay.com that they’ll be heading into the studio with none other than U2 to record a cover of "The Saints Are Coming," a tune by late-’70s-era Scottish band the Skids (one of whom went on to form Big Country), to benefit Music Rising, an organization that replaces instruments lost by musicians in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"One year later, the devastation is still fresh in our minds, and we’d like to keep it in yours," the band wrote on the site. "New Orleans has always been a special city to us, being a hotbed of music and creativity, and it’s hard to believe parts of the [Gulf of Mexico] region still remain devastated. We feel that it’s important to continue to raise awareness."

According to the post, U2 approached Green Day about working on the song, and the two bands will meet up soon to begin recording — presumably in London, where U2 are currently working with producer Rick Rubin. U2 guitarist the Edge is a founding partner of Music Rising, which since its formation in November 2005 has provided more than 2,000 working musicians in the Gulf Coast with new instruments and gear.

It wasn’t clear at press time just when or how the bands’ cover of "Saints" will be made available, but the song will mark the first new music from Green Day since their American Idiot album. They began sessions for a new album last week at an undisclosed studio in California’s East Bay area (see "Green Day Get Back In The Studio To Work On Next Album").
