Button ‘can be F1 world champion’

Filed under: Sports, Formula 1 - worldall @ 7:40 pm

Jenson Button can build on his Hungarian Grand Prix victory and become Formula One world champion one day, according to Honda team boss Nick Fry.

Button, 26, won his first Grand Prix in his 113th race after charging through the field from 14th on the grid.

"I’ve no doubts that Jenson Button has the ability to become world champion and that Honda as a team can give him the car to do so," said Fry.

"The first win took a while but now we can go forward."

Button had little time to celebrate his triumph as he jetted off to China for a four-day public relations event.

But he said: "We need to celebrate so we can start looking for the next one.

"Hopefully I can celebrate this win next week when I get back. Then we can look forward to Turkey because we have some things which will improve our performance again - in the dry and the wet."

Button insisted his win at the Hungaroring was a vindication of his decision to commit his long-term future to Honda.

He joined the team in 2003 and signed a new contract last year after paying about £10m of his own money to secure release from a deal with Williams that originally meant he would drive for them from 2006.

But until Hungary that looked was looking like money wasted as Honda’s lack of pace and technical problems restricted him to just one podium spot this season in Malaysia.

"I have definitely made the right choice to stay with Honda," he said. "My time at Honda has been fantastic but we have had some low times."

Fry added: "Jenson has been a fantastic team leader but I have been pushing him to be a bit more dominant and domineering.

"But he is always wanting to work with people as opposed to ranting and raving.

"When things have gone wrong he has always said it was us that got it wrong, not one person in particular.

"Credit to him, he has been a great team player and he has led this team to their first victory and hopefully more will come."
